Windows-box best practices

OK - I don't recommend using windows - but most of us have to maintain that last windows machine and make it work with Linux servers.

Installing

We often have to install on hardware that was not pre packaged with windoze - or had to install to have a particular version of windoze. As of 2014 I don't recommend using anything later than windoze7.

Best to use a SSD for a single drive in the system - improves performance.

After following the install you will need to install typically three groups of drivers

• Motherboard
• Chipset
• video card

Next - keep going back and running windoze update.

• Turn off all auto-run features!
• Install required software.

Last system I had to create took 17 reboots..

Configuring

• Set the screen background to a solid color.
• In the performance settings you will find you can turn off shadowed fonts - now the desktop icon fonts are much more readable.
• As of April-2014 windows backup fails to complete if you backup to a network directory - the fixes listed on the web don't work - it is not a permission problem as some files get created. Most likely you will want a third party solution.
• Set the time sync to set to your local Linux server running ntp.
• Find HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer - set to all zeros - gets rid of the 'shortcut' text in new short cuts.
• Add run command to shortcut panel.
  • right click taskbar - properties/start-_menu/customize -- activate run command
• While you are here
  • turn off displaying documents - we want to use network directories.
  • Turn off favorites
  • turn off personal folder
  • Recorded TV
  • videos
